About This Retreat

Linh Son International Buddhist Temple is a Vietnamese Buddhist monastery in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh — one of the most sacred sites in the entire Buddhist world. Kushinagar is where Shakyamuni Buddha entered Parinirvana — the final passing away that marked the completion of his earthly mission — more than 2,500 years ago. The Mahaparinirvana Temple, housing the magnificent reclining Buddha, stands just minutes from the monastery.

Linh Son is part of the Linh Son World Order — an international Vietnamese Buddhist network with temples across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The Kushinagar monastery was established to serve both the large Vietnamese pilgrimage community that visits this sacred site and practitioners from across the world who come to Kushinagar for meditation, study, and contemplation in the presence of the Parinirvana site.

Staying at Linh Son offers something rare: the opportunity to live as a temporary monastic in a living Vietnamese Buddhist community while being steps from one of Buddhism's holiest locations. Daily chanting, morning meditation, and the profound quiet of the Parinirvana temple at dawn create an atmosphere that is simply unlike any retreat centre in the world.

Staying at Linh Son while visiting the Parinirvana Temple was one of the most moving experiences of my Buddhist practice. The monastery is clean, simple, and welcoming — the monks and nuns are kind to pilgrims regardless of tradition. Attending the morning chanting in the monastery while the Parinirvana Temple opens at dawn is something I will never forget. This is what pilgrimage is supposed to be.

What is the Parinirvana Temple and can I visit it?+
The Mahaparinirvana Temple in Kushinagar houses one of the most venerated Buddha images in the world — a 6-metre reclining figure from the 5th century CE, marking the spot where the Buddha passed away. It is open to all visitors and is a short walk from Linh Son. The temple is especially moving at dawn and dusk when local monks and visiting pilgrims gather for prayer.
What is the Buddhist Pilgrimage Circuit?+
