About This Retreat
Kanzeon Zendo is South India's dedicated Rinzai Zen retreat centre — established in 2022 in the village of Perumalmalai, perched at 1,700 metres in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, near the well-known hill station of Kodaikanal. The name Kanzeon is the Japanese name for Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion — known in Sanskrit as Guanyin and in Tibetan as Chenrezig.
The zendo was founded by teachers in the lineage of Father Ama Samy (born 1936), the Indian Jesuit priest and Rinzai Zen master who trained under Yamada Koun Roshi in Japan and received Dharma transmission in 1982, becoming one of the most respected Zen teachers in Asia. Ama Samy founded the original Bodhi Zendo on the same hillside in Perumalmalai in 1996 and spent decades guiding students. Kanzeon Zendo continues and deepens that legacy in a purpose-built retreat facility.
The centre offers 15 single rooms each with private bathrooms — an unusually high standard of comfort for a dedicated Zen retreat centre, allowing students to maintain the energy needed for intensive practice without discomfort. The zendo hall, interview room, dining hall, and grounds are all designed specifically for Zen practice. Programs range from weekend introductory retreats to week-long intensive sesshin.

Reviews
I had sat several sesshins before but nothing quite like this. Kanzeon has an intimacy that larger centres lack — 15 students, deep silence, and dokusan available every day. The setting is extraordinary — misty mountains, cool air, total quiet. The teacher's guidance during dokusan was precise and penetrating. The private bathroom in each room is not a luxury — it is what makes sustained practice possible without logistical friction.
✓ 7-day Sesshin, Jan 2026
Coming from the Ama Samy tradition, visiting Kanzeon felt like coming home. The zendo is purpose-built, the atmosphere is pure, and the teachers carry the lineage with great integrity and warmth. Perumalmalai itself is remarkable — the mist, the forest, the silence. If you want serious Zen practice in South India, there is no better place.
✓ Sesshin, Oct 2025
I came knowing almost nothing about Zen. The introductory weekend opened something I had not expected — the simplicity of just sitting, just being, just breathing. The teachers are kind and non-dogmatic. Kanzeon doesn't require you to be Buddhist or to hold any particular beliefs. Just show up and sit. The food was simple and good, the room was spotlessly clean, and the Palani Hills are genuinely beautiful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior Zen experience to attend?+
No. Kanzeon Zendo offers introductory weekend retreats designed for newcomers — covering basic zazen posture and technique, the sesshin schedule, and an orientation to koan practice. For intensive sesshin, some prior sitting experience is helpful but not mandatory. Email kanzeonzendo@gmail.com to discuss your background.
What is the relationship between Kanzeon Zendo and Bodhi Zendo?+
Both Kanzeon Zendo and Bodhi Zendo are located in Perumalmalai and share the lineage of Father Ama Samy. Kanzeon Zendo (est. 2022) is a newer, purpose-built facility with 15 en-suite rooms, designed specifically for intensive retreat. Both centres continue the tradition of Rinzai Zen in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu.
What is koan practice?+
A koan is a question or situation given by a Zen teacher that cannot be resolved by conceptual thinking alone — it is designed to exhaust the ordinary mind and open a deeper insight. Classic koans include "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" and "What was your face before your parents were born?" Koan work happens in dokusan (private interview) with the teacher. Kanzeon also works with shikantaza (pure sitting without koan) — the teacher will guide you to the appropriate method.
How do I get to Perumalmalai from Madurai or Coimbatore?+
From Madurai: taxi or bus to Kodaikanal (approx. 3 hours), then local auto/jeep to Perumalmalai (30 min). From Coimbatore: bus to Dindigul, then to Kodaikanal. Kanzeon can assist with local transport directions on request. It is best to contact them in advance to arrange arrival pickup if needed.
