About This Retreat
Deer Park Institute is a centre for the study of classical Indian wisdom traditions, established in 2006 in the former campus of a Buddhist monastic institute in Bir, Himachal Pradesh — the same valley as Sherab Ling Monastery and Thosamling Nunnery, surrounded by Himalayan peaks and the paragliding capital of India. Deer Park is a project of Siddhartha's Intent Society, under the inspiration of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche.
The institute's core vision is to re-create the spirit of Nalanda — the great ancient university where all traditions of Buddhism were studied alongside other schools of Indian philosophy, arts, and sciences. Programs at Deer Park span Buddhist philosophy and meditation, classical Indian languages (Sanskrit, Tibetan), visual arts, music, drama, and local wisdom traditions — taught by a distinguished resident and visiting faculty.
What makes Deer Park distinctive is its breadth: this is not a single-tradition retreat centre but a genuinely cross-disciplinary institute that welcomes everyone from serious Buddhist scholars to artists and musicians seeking to explore the contemplative roots of Indian culture. The campus, set in lush forest with mountain views, has a library, meditation hall, accommodation, and a beautiful community atmosphere.

The Bir Setting
Bir is a small town in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh — increasingly well known as the paragliding capital of India and a quiet alternative to the busier towns of Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj. The valley has a significant Tibetan refugee community, several monasteries, and a distinctly unhurried pace. For those on retreat or study, the clean mountain air and forested campus create naturally supportive conditions.
Nearby: Sherab Ling Monastery (3 km) — the seat of Palpung Rinpoche in the Kagyu tradition; Thosamling Nunnery (25 km, upper Dharamsala area); the Bir Billing takeoff site for paragliding if you want to balance study with adventure.
Reviews
Deer Park is unlike any other retreat centre I have visited. The combination of Buddhist philosophy, Sanskrit study, and classical music — all in the same week — produced something extraordinary. The faculty are of the highest calibre. Bir itself is a gem of a town. I left feeling as though I had touched something of what Nalanda must have been.
✓ Philosophy Workshop, Mar 2026
The thangka workshop at Deer Park was transformative — not just as art training but as a meditative and philosophical experience. The teacher brought the iconographic meaning alive in every session. The food was wonderful, the campus beautiful, and the community of students was the most intellectually alive group I have met at any retreat. Will definitely return.
✓ Sacred Art Workshop, Oct 2025
I came for a meditation retreat and ended up also sitting in on Sanskrit classes and evening music sessions. Deer Park has a quality of intellectual and spiritual openness that is genuinely rare. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's vision is clearly alive in this place. Highly recommended for serious students of any tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Buddhist background to attend?+
Not at all. Deer Park welcomes students of all backgrounds — Buddhist practitioners, yoga students, artists, musicians, scholars, and curious seekers. Programs are offered at different levels. The cross-disciplinary nature of the institute means there is always something suitable for newcomers and advanced students alike.
Do foreign nationals need a special permit for Bir?+
Yes. Bir/Billing is in a restricted area requiring an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for foreign nationals. Deer Park provides guidance on how to obtain this. Check deerpark.in/permit-foreign for the latest process — it is straightforward and can be arranged before arrival.
What is the relationship between Deer Park and Buddha Pāda?+
Both Deer Park (Bir) and Buddha Pāda (Kalimpong) are projects under Siddhartha's Intent Society, under Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. They have a sister relationship and sometimes collaborate on programs. Buddha Pāda has a stronger Japanese aesthetic influence; Deer Park is the older and more established of the two.
How do I find the current programme schedule?+
