About This Retreat
Dharmalaya Institute is one of India's most innovative retreat centres — a pioneering eco-campus in Bir, Himachal Pradesh that weaves together Buddhist meditation, permaculture, yoga, natural building, and what it calls "compassionate living." The name itself captures the vision: Dharma (the path of wisdom and compassion) + ālaya (Sanskrit for home or sanctuary).
Founded by Craig Stehr and a small community of practitioners, Dharmalaya is not just a retreat space but a living demonstration that inner contemplative practice and outer ecological responsibility are expressions of the same impulse. The campus was built using natural building techniques — rammed earth, cob, stone, bamboo — and is substantially self-sufficient through its permaculture food garden, solar systems, and composting infrastructure.
Programs at Dharmalaya range from intensive meditation retreats and mindfulness courses to hands-on workshops in natural building, permaculture design, and sustainable living. This makes Dharmalaya a rare destination: it suits both the dedicated Buddhist meditator and the socially engaged activist who wants to understand how to live more lightly and compassionately on the earth.

Reviews
Dharmalaya is the only place I have visited that truly integrates inner and outer practice. The morning meditation, followed by work in the permaculture garden, followed by an evening discussion on Buddhist ethics around a fire — these three together do something that no retreat I have done separately has achieved. The natural buildings are beautiful, the food is extraordinary, and the community is warm and genuine.

I came primarily for the natural building workshop and left having also deepened my meditation practice in ways I had not expected. The physical work of building with earth somehow clarified things that hours of sitting alone had not. Bir is a wonderful town, the mountains are gorgeous, and Dharmalaya has created something very rare — a place that makes contemplative practice tangible.

The permaculture design course at Dharmalaya was one of the best learning experiences of my adult life. Craig and the team bring both intellectual depth and practical hands-on skill to everything. The campus is itself the course — you are learning in the middle of a working, living system. And the food! Everything from the garden. Utterly fresh and beautifully cooked. Will absolutely return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Buddhist background to attend?+
No. Dharmalaya welcomes people of all backgrounds — secular meditators, yoga practitioners, environmentalists, activists, and curious travellers. The Dharma at Dharmalaya is understood broadly as a way of living with wisdom and compassion, not as adherence to a particular religious tradition.
Can I come as a volunteer or wwoofer?+
Yes — Dharmalaya welcomes long-term volunteers and offers a karma yoga (service) option where volunteers contribute work in exchange for accommodation and meals. Contact dharmalaya.in in advance to arrange this. The campus has a genuine community feel and service-based stays are an integral part of that.
Do foreign nationals need a permit for Bir?+
Yes. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required. Dharmalaya can provide guidance on how to obtain this. The process is straightforward and can be arranged through the Himachal Pradesh government offices before arrival or at Dharamsala on the way.
What is the food like?+
All meals are vegetarian, largely organic, and much of the produce comes from the Dharmalaya permaculture garden. The kitchen takes great care with flavour and nutrition. Guests with dietary requirements (vegan, gluten-free, etc.) are accommodated — mention when booking.
